Uganda occupies a part of eastern Africa about the size of the UK. It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Lake Victoria, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south and Congo (formerly Zaire) to the west. It is completely landlocked, but has 36,000 sq km of water within its 236,000 sq km of area. Its great beauty led to Winston Churchill referring to it as the 'Pearl of Africa'.
